Norman S. Beck served as a member of the 118th Airborne Military Police Company. This unit was part of the United States Army's XVIII Airborne Corps. His duties included but were not limited to squad supervision, narcotics investigation, technical accident investigation, line police and tactical airborne operations. Beck also received special warfare training from the 5th Special Forces Group.

During his term of service at the Durham Police Department, Beck was involved in the supervision of many different work groups. He was responsible for developing and implementing work plans, evaluation of projects and employee performance, working within and completing line items budgets, communicating with the public, and preparing detailed reports. The work environments that he encouraged promoted employee participation in work plans as well as courses of actions. Norman received extensive managerial and leadership training to include race relations, employee development, use of force, and sexual harassment awareness. His duties also included conducting administrative and criminal investigations. He has provided given expert testimony, conducted field testing, and processed accident scenes for reconstruction purposes. Other responsibilities included direct investigation, oversight, and the training of law enforcement officers in the investigation of major accident collisions. Beck has instructed ambulance, rescue, and fire department vehicles on emergency driving and complying with North Carolina General Statues and organizational standard operating procedures. During his career, Beck has conducted over 15,000 traffic stops. He also responded to all major traffic accidents as either an on call supervisor and or investigator.
Beck served as a member of the Durham Police Department’s Accident Review Board which was charged with investigating emergency vehicle collisions if departmental vehicles were involved. The board also determined fault and made recommendations if additional training or corrective action was needed. Beck has received training at Northwestern University, Central Missouri State University, University of North Florida , as well as local, state, and federal agencies.
Beck has given expert opinions in United States District Courts as well as North Carolina State Courts in the areas of accident reconstruction, investigative procedures, police management, and the use of non-lethal force.

Beck has been a member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He has served as President of the Durham County Chapter and as a trustee on the North Carolina State Board of MADD. Beck has also served as President of the Board of Domestic Violence Civil Legal Services Inc. which provides emergency representation services for victims of domestic violence. He is also a member of the Durham County Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police. Beck is also a member of several professional investigative organizations,ASIS, NCISS, and NCAPI.
